As of 1600 hours on Saturday, January 2, Baltimore City firefighters were battling a fire in a block of rowhouses that went to a 5-alarm blaze in less than 30 minutes. The incident broke out at about 2:50 pm with a reported rowhouse fire in the 800 block of Homestead Street. Units arrived reporting heavy fire conditions in a two-story row, requesting a second-alarm almost immediately. Subsequent 3rd, 4th and 5th alarms were called within about a half-hour. The fire rapidly extended to other rowhouses through the roof. About an hour into the blaze command reported structural collapse.
