At 1445 hours the Pekin Fire Department responded to a fire in the paint tower of the newly constructed Hanna Steel Corporation Plant on Hanna Drive,in Pekin,IL..
The plant was scheduled to begin limited production on January 29, 1999. The area where the fire occurred was still under final fitting out and the suppression system was not yet installed.
Initial response was 2Quints, 1Engine, and 1Heavy Rescue and Shift Commander for a total of 12 men. Additional off duty personnel were recalled to respond to the scene and man 2reserve Engines at Pekin Stations. Mutual Aid was furnished by the Peoria and East Peoria Fire Departments with an additional Truck,Engine,and Quint.
The cause is under investigation, with damage expected to reach as much as $1,000,000.
