Belleville police were still uncertain Sunday as to the cause of a head-on collision that killed four people early Saturday.

The accident happened shortly before 2:30 a.m. in the 9300 block of Old St. Louis Road on the eastern edge of town near Centreville. There were no skid marks and no known witnesses, police said.

The area of road where the accident occurred is narrow and has several curves, and has been the scene of many accidents over the years, police said.

Killed were Christopher Handel, 26, of Millstadt; Charles Laskowski, 58, of Swansea; Jack Roberts Jr., 32, of Trenton; and Jennifer Larson, 25, of Belleville.

Handel, a part-time police officer in Millstadt and a security guard at Belleville Township West High School, was driving a 1996 Dodge Ram pickup. Laskowski was driving a 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, and Roberts and Larson were passengers in his car. None of the occupants of the car was wearing a seat belt; authorities were uncertain whether Handel was wearing one.
