A Danville, IL family safely escaped from a fire in the back of their home early this morning.
A police officer who was passing the house when he noticed smoke, awakened the family.
Danville firefighters, manning three engines, were called to the scene at about 5:20 a.m. It took them over an hour to get the fire under control.
Damage to the house was estimated at $17,000. The back of the house and attic sustained fire damage while the rest of the structure received smoke and heat damage.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
