This afternoon (2/14/99) agencies from Grand Isle County, Vermont rescued
six ice fishermen off on a ice flow that had broken off and began to move
towards the middle of Lake Champlain. The call came in at 1344 hours
from Vermont 911 that fishermen were trapped on the ice flow. Vermont
911 obtained the cell phone number from one of the fishermen which
enabled Grand Isle Command to contact them directly. Command was
established and units staged at the end of South End Road in North Hero,
Vermont and began operations to rescue the fishermen. Two by two over
the course of an hour the fishermen were removed to safety by fire and
rescue personnel. None of the fishermen required medical treatment or
transport once they were safely on shore.
Agencies assisting at the scene or on stand by were:
Grand Isle Fire Department, Grand Isle Rescue, South Hero Fire
Department, South Hero Rescue, Alburg Rescue, Grand Isle County Sheriff's
Office, Colchester Technical Rescue Unit and U. S. Coast Guard.
Dispatching and coordination of incoming mutual aid agencies was provided
by South Hero Base which dispatches for the lower three towns in the
Richard Gaun, Chief
South Hero Volunteer Fire Department
Town of South Hero - "Gateway to the Islands"
