Ballston Spa NY Apartment Building Blaze
Careless cooking in a 12 unit apartment building left 8 families homeless Saturday afternoon. The other 4 unit were unoccupied at the time of the fire. The 16 year old occupant of the apartment had been cooking french fries on the stove, when he left the apartment to go upstairs. Upon returning he found a heavy smoke condition and went outside and broke out a window to attempt to extinguish the fire with a portable extinguisher. First arriving engine encountered heavy fire in the kitchen area with extension horizontally into the hallway and laundry area. All twelve units suffered smoke damage and two others had water damage. Both companies from Ballston Spa remained on the scene for about three hours performing overhaul. The apartment buildings gas and electric were shut off and the occupancy certificate revoked. Approximately three hours later, BSFD was dispatched to the same location for a heavy smoke condition. Upon arrival, a heavier fire condition was encountered in the same apartment with extension into the apartment above and beside the original unit. Mutual aid was provided from the following companies; Burnt Hills, Ballston Lake, Round Lake, Malta Ridge, Rock City Falls, Harmony Corners, Saratoga Springs. The cause of the second fire is still under investigation by the Saratoga County Cause & Origin team.
