030799: @ 1925 hours Box 428, 9th & Elm streets was transmitted for a reported building fire in the 200 block of N.9th street. E1,E3,E9, Sn1,L3, R1, and chiefs 3 & 7 responded. Car3 (D.C. Moyer) arrived 2 minutes later and reported heavy smoke showing from the upper floors of a 2&1/2 story MOR, mixed-occupancy structure at 236 N. 9th street. Companies encountered heavy fire conditions in the basement & 1st floor of the building which housed a mercantile occupancy on the 1st floor with apartments above. Due to the layout of the building and fire conditions, a 2nd alarm was struck at 1934 hours bringing E13,E5, L1, and chiefs 1 & 2 to the scene. An aggressive attack with numerous 1&3/4" attack lines contained the fire to the building of origin. The fire was placed under control @ 2100 hours. FM10 was requested to the scene and officials have labeled the fire suspicious. This was the 2nd fire in the same block in a week. A fire a few doors away on 030199 damaged a 2 story mixed-occupancy building and claimed the life of a 2nd floor tenant. That fire has been labeled arson.
