Brush Fire Disaster in Michigan
Washtenaw County, Michigan--
Major brush fire hits Pittsfield and York Townships encompassing over 500 acres of land and one home destroyed.
On Tuesday, March 30, 1999, 125 fire fighters from 16 department and five counties battle a massive grass and brush fire which eventually caused the loss of a home. The raging brush fire stretched for over 7 miles long, along a railroad then progressed Eastward threatening numerous homes and farms.
The alarm was initially called out at 3:30pm and eventually subsided until 10:00pm. In the final stages, the State Department of Natural Resources brought in specialized forest fire fighting Hummers, for mopping up.
The suspected cause of the fire was sparks emitting from a passing freight train. The investigation continues.
