Carthage TX MCI-Van vs Car with 12 patients
On friday afternoon on 4/30- a van and a passenger car hit nearly head-on on U.S. Hwy. 79, just West of Carthage. The van was carrying 8 mentally challanged adults and had two caretakers. Some of the injuries were moderate to severe, and the occupants of the car, two young females received only minor injuries. Carthage Fire Department sent an engine and their Rescue Truck to the scene. Ambulances were dispatched from East Texas Medical Center/EMS out of Carthage, and once on scene, mutual aid was called from Henderson, Tatum and Gladewater. During this call, and before any of the patients were transported, another accident with 4 injuries came in on State Hwy. 149 at Riderville. The Rescue truck was available if needed and was sent along with another engine from Carthage. This accident had 3 persons with serious injuries and 1 with only minor injuries. Henderson EMS was diverted to the second accident along with a ETMC/EMS Regional Director responding from the first scene. As ambulances arrived at ETMC-Carthage, they were turned around for the response to the second incident. All patients went to ETMC-Carthage since it was the closest hospital and the serious injuries were stabilized for transfer. Three Medical helicopters, 2 from East Texas Medical Center and 1 from MFH both in Tyler were sent to Carthage to evacuate the more seriously injured to the Level 1 Trauma Center at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler.
