At approximately 3:13 a.m., May 12, 1999, the Rolla Fire & Rescue was dispatched to a mobile home fire at Huffman Trailer Park.

The Rolla Police Departmentís Central Communications dispatchers advised that children were possibly trapped inside the home.

Firefighters were on the scene in four minutes and rescue operations were initiated. One adult had escaped the raging fire, though four children still remained inside.

Firefighters initially located three of the children in one bedroom and quickly removed them to the hands of other public safety officials. The fourth child was later found in a second bedroom.

At the time of this release, three of the children were confirmed fatalities and the fourth was transferred by Life Flight helicopter to St. Louis Childrenís Hospital in critical condition. The adult was transported to Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC) for treatment.

Investigating the cause and origin of the fire was the Rolla Fire Marshal, the State Fire Marshalís Office and the Rolla Police Department.

The cause has been determined as accidental. The origin was the den/living room area. However, at this time, the source of ignition is undetermined.
