Incident Response Summary
At 1008 p.m. on 3 July 1999 Manchester Fire Rescue EMS (MFRE) responded to an alarm reporting a sprinkler system activation at 579 W. Middle Turnpike, Allied Printing. This is a large two story steel constructed printing manufacturer.
Upon arrival MFRE personnel found light smoke emitting from a trash compactor door. Upon further investigation they found the building full of heavy smoke and moderate heat. MFRE crews, using a thermal imaging camera, found an active fire being contained by the sprinkler system in an ink storage area. The fire was completely extinguished buy these crews in less than 15 minutes.
Crews from East Hartford, and Manchester 8th Utilities District assisted at the fire. The fire was controlled using 35 personnel with seven pumpers, two ladders and six chief officers. Additional crews from East Hartford, 8th Utilities and South Windsor provided Mutual Aid coverage during the fire operation.
Damage: there was extensive smoke damage throughout, water mixing the printing ink created an hazardous materials situation which caused an extensive clean up problem for fire fighters and Allied printing. This cleanup was assisted by CT. Dept. of Environmental Protection and Environmental Services of South Windsor.
MFRE Lt. John Tsokalas was treated and released at Manchester Memorial Hospital for a knee strain.
The cause is attributed spontaneous combustion of rags kept in the ink storage area. Damage is preliminarily estimated at over $100,000.
