Firemans Home destroyed by fire in New London NY
On Dec 24,1999 at about 2330 hours New London NY Fire Dept was paged out for a reported furnace fire at the Geisler Farm on Main Street about 1000ft from the Fire Station. As Temperatures were dipping around
-4 below, The call was made to put Verona,Durhamville on the floor for possible moveup. As fireman were getting to the Firehouse Oneida County Fire Control Notified the Chief and reported a possible Structure fire at that time the call was made to move Verona and Durhamville to the scene with a Tanker and Man Power about 30 seconds after the call of a possible structure fire, Fire control notified the chief with a report of a house Fully involved. The first fireman on the scene had a century old farm house with the porch and living room fully involved, Fireman started attacking the fire and before the Mutial aid companies could get to the scene trucks were running out of water or having problems with pumps freezing up, The chief made another call for tankers and man power from North Bay,McConnellsville,(in Oneida County) and Wampsville, Canastota (in Madison County)a Relay was implemented from the Erie Canal about 1/4 mile from the fire scene utilizing 2 pumpers relaying water to the on scene trucks. Even though firefighters lost the home they did a good job at saving the other structures close by, a Large Dairy Barn and another House within 200 ft of the fire scene. Fireman were still on the scene early into the morning mopping up hot spots. The owner who is a member of the New London Fire Dept said he believes the fire started in the furnace and he just went to bed before spotting flames. We would like to thank the Ladies Auxiliary for suppling hot coffee and drinks for the fire fighters we dont know what we would do without these fine women.
