The following fires occurred in Reading over the past few days:
--121699 : At 1251 hours, Box 241, 9th & Franklin streets was transmitted for a dwelling fire at 936 Franklin street. Units arrived to find a fire burning in a breezeway and in the walls & floors of a 2&1/2 story M.O.R multiple dwelling. Companies proceeded to "open up" and extinguish the stubborn fire with 1&3/4-inch handlines. The fire was brought under control at 1405 hours and left 4 people homeless. A damage estimate was unavailable. Companies assigned on the box : E1,3,5, L2,L1,R1,Medic 4, C1 & 3.
--122199 : At 1441 hours box 87, Ritter and W.Oley streets was transmitted for a dwelling fire at 639 Weiser street. Units arrived and found nothing showing from the exterior of the 3 story E.O.R. dwelling. After making entry, Heavy smoke was reported inside the dwelling and a working fire transmitted. Neighbors then reported people possibly trapped on the 2nd floor. Companies began searching as a 1&3/4-inch handline brought the fire in the 1st floor under control by 1500 hours. Searches were negative--the occupants escaped on their own through the rear of the dwelling. 1 occupant suffered minor burns but refused medical treatment. The fire caused $15,000 damage and left 4 people homeless. Officials believe 1 of the occupants intentionally set the fire. Companies assigned on the box : E11,3,9,L1,Sn1,R1,Medic6, C1 & 7
---122299: At 0847 hours box 61, 5th & Pike streets was transmitted for a dwelling fire at 539 Pike street. Units arrived and found smoke coming from the basement of a 3 story M.O.R dwelling next door at 537 Pike street. Companies forced entry and used a 1&3/4-inch handline to bring a fire in the basement under control by 0900 hours. A family of 6 was left temporarily homelss by the fire which caused $10,000 in damage. Companies assigned to the box : E11,9,3,L3,R1,Medic4, C5 & 7
---122399 : At 0917 hours box 428, 9th & Elm streets was transmitted for a building fire at 350 N. 9th street. Units arrived to find "nothing showing". Dispatchers were asked to call the reporting party back to verify the address and it was learned the correct address was 35 N 9th street, about 4 blocks away. Companies were re-directed and arrived to find smoke showing from a boarded up 2&1/2 story M.O.R vacant building at 35 N. 9th street. Companies forced entry and brought the fire in the basement under control with a 1&3/4-inch handline by 0944 hours. Officials believe the fire was started by squatters attempting to keep warm. A damage estimate was unavailable. Companies assigned to the box : E1,3,9,Sn1,L3,R1,Medic4, C1 & 9.
