The following fires occurred in Reading over the past few days:
---010500: At 0510 hours box 525, Front & Amity streets was transmitted for a dwelling fire at 1502 Centre Avenue. Companies arrived to find a 3 story M.O.R apartment building with fire showing 3rd floor. Companies made an aggressive attack with a 1&3/4-inch line and had the fire under control by 0546 hours. The fire was contained to the apartment of origin and appears electrical in nature. 2 occupants were left homless and a damage was estimated at $15,000. Companies assigned to the box : E11,3,9, L3,R1,Medic6, C4 & 8.
----010500: At 1728 hours box 75, Schuylkill Ave & W. Windsor street was transmitted for a dwelling fire at 336 W. Windsor street. Companies arrived to find a 3 story vacant M.O.R dwelling with smoke showing. Units brought the suspicious basement fire under control by 1740 hours with a 1&3/4-inch line. A damage estimate was not given. Companies assigned to the box : E11,3,9,L3,R1,Medic1, C1,2, & 9.
----010700: At 0827 hours box 812, W. Douglass and McKnight streets was transmitted for a dwelling fire at 729 McKnight street. Companies arrived to find smoke showing from a 3 story M.O.R apartment building. The fire in a 1st floor bedroom was brought under control by 0840 hours with a 1&3/4-inch line. Damage was estimated at about $5,000 and the boyfriend of the 1st floor tenant was arrested on arson and related charges after admitting setting the fire. Companies assigned on the box: E11,3,9, L1,R2, Medic4, C3 & 6
----010900 : At 2333 hours box 522, Centre Ave and Richmond street was transmitted for a building fire at 1731-33 Centre Avenue. Companies arrived to find heavy smoke showing front and rear of a 1,2,& 3 story irregular shaped commercial building. The building measured approximately 50x250 feet ( fronting on 2 streets ) and housed the Russo and Sons food storage/distribution company. As companies stretched lines and attempted to find the seat of the fire a 2nd alarm was struck at 2347 hours. Companies located the fire in the 1st floor center of the building. The fire extended into the walls and eventually to the roof as companies made an aggressive attack with multiple 1&3/4-inch and a 2&1/2-inch line. Companies were hampered by heavy smoke, the layout of the building, and roof built on top of roof in the fire area that needed to be open. A 3rd alarm was struck at 0008 hours. Companies brought the fire under control at 0115 hours.2 additional engines and 1 ladder were called to the scene to assist in overhaul and wrap up. The cause of the fire is under investigation and damage is expected to exceed $200,000. Companies assigned to the box on 1st alarm: E11,9,3,L3,R1,Medic4,C5 & 7. 2nd alarm: E5,13,L1, C1,4,& 8. 3rd alarm: E1,14,Sn1, C2 & 9. Special call for relief: E8,12,L2.
While all hands were working at the 3rd alarm, remaining city companies, and county mutual aid companies handled 3 suspicious fires set in rubbish near buildings in 2 seperate areas of the city.
