A structure fire that occured right at shift change destroyed a two story wood frame house in Marlborough. Group 3 had just come on duty at 08:00 when Marlborough Fire Alarm reported a structure fire at 212 Mechanic Street. Engines 1, 2, Ladder 2, Rescue 1 and Car 3 responded. Engine 2 reported smoke showing when they reached the intersection of Pleasant and Elm Street, about 1/4 mile away, the box for a working fire was struck at 08:06. Engine 3 and Ladder 1 covered at Headquarters, off duty personnelwere called in to man the reserve engines at Stations 2 and 3. Engine 4 was special called to the scene at 08:21. there were initial problems with water supply, the first hydrant that was tagged was undermined.

The structure was a 2 story wood frame of balloon construction. The fire started in the vicinity of a wood stove and traveled up the walls into the attic and cockloft area. At one point, the firefighters operating on floor #2 were evacuated because of an impending roof collapse. There was a lot of furniture and boxes stored on floor #2, which also fed the fire and later impeded overhauling operations.

While Engines 1 and 2 were still at the Mechanic Street incident, Fire Alarm recieved a report of a dryer fire at 92 Maplewood Avenue. Engine 4, Rescue 1 and Ladder 2 had just cleared that the Mechanic Street scene and responded, along with Engine 5. The fire was confined to the contents of the dryer.

The incident on Mechanic Street was terminated at 11:52, the Maplewood Avenue incident was terminated at 12:10 hours.
