On February 12th at approx 1100 hours the City of Durham Fire Department responded to a reported house fire with subjects trapped. Dispatched were first due Engine 5, Engine 2, Engine 1, Ladder 2, Squad 2, Rescue 1, Battalion 1, Mobile Support 1, and Medic 3. The other on duty Battalion Chief, Battalion 2 responded as well as the on duty paramedic supervisor. Enroute communication advised all units that a small child was confirmed trapped inside the residence, and that multiple calls were coming in. Engine 5 arrived within 3 minutes of the call to find heavy fire venting out of a living room in the front. Fast attack mode was intiated, and a line was advanced into the structure. The firefighter of Engine 5 began knock down of the fire while the captain of Engine 5 and the crew of Rescue 1 began a search. The 5 year old child was immediately found in the fire room, and was an obvious fatality. Knockdown of the fire was achieved quickly. The fire is currently under investigation.
