Two civilians were burned in 2 seperate fires in Reading over the past few days.
****031600: At 2328 hours box 143, McClellan & Scott streets was transmitted for a reported dwelling fire at 637-A McClellan street in the city's Oakbrook housing project. Companies arrived at 2333 hours to find a 2 story brick project home with smoke inside and a burn victim outside.A grease fire in the kicthen had caused considerable damage but was out on arrival of the 1st in companies.The occupant suffered burns after attempting to extinguish the fire with water which resulted in a flash fire. Smoke was vented from the building and companies returned to service within a few minutes. The injured occupant was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The fire caused about $5,000 damage. ****031700 : A two-alarm fire heavily damage a northwest Reading apartment building,causing burns to 1 civilian and leaving 8 people homeless. At 0754 hours,box 84, Front & Spring streets was transmitted for an apartment building fire at 920 N. Front street with people possibly trapped. Companies arrived at 0756 hours to find a 3 story E.O.R. apartment building with heavy fire showing 1st floor rear and speading to the 2nd floor and also to a similar type building on the exposure 2 side. A 2nd alarm was struck at 0805 hours and it was reported that a burn victim was being tended to by EMS. Primary and secondary searches of the building proved negative. Companies used numerous 1&3/4-inch lines to bring the fire under control at 0850 hours.The burned occupant was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The fire caused $75,000 damage and left 8 people homeless. The fire was caused by a pan left on a stove in a 1st floor apartment.
