The following incidents occurred in Reading over the past few days:
----042500: A natural gas explosion and resulting fire damaged an industrial plant in the city's Millmont section. At 0449 hours box 158, Arlington Street and Orrton Avenue was transmitted for a building fire at IFS Industries at 301 Orrton Avenue. Companies arrived at 0451 hours to find a 2 story 100x200 cinderblock industrial building with fire showing from the roof area and sprinklers flowing inside. As companies were stetching lines they were advised by employees that there had been an explosion preceeding the fire.Through the smoke large cracks in the walls running the whole length of the building, missing cinder blocks and blown-out overhead garage doors were discovered. Using caution, companies extinguished the remaining fire inside and on the roof with 1&3/4-inch handlines. The fire was placed under control at 0520 hours. No injuries were reported in the blast which officials say occurred when an accumulation of gas in a boiler room ignited. Damage to the building was estimated at $100,000. Companies assigned to the box: E14,5,3,L1,R1,Medic6, C5 & 7.
-----042500: ***MVA pin-job*** At 1817 hours a rescue assignment was dispatched to a reported MVA in the area of 4th & Laurel streets. Companies arrived to find a car which had crashed into a telephone pole head-on with 2 elderly victims trapped inside and high tension wires hanging from the pole which had been sheared in half. Companies went to work with the hurst tool as an additional engine company was special called to assist.Companies freed both victims by 1831 hours. They were both transported to local hospitals and their conditions were unknown.Companies assigned to the incident: E5,R1,Medic6, C-7. Special call: E3,Medic7
----042600: A two-alarm fire caused by squatters heavily damaged two vacant buildings. At 0110 hours box 34, 3rd and Walnut streets was transmitted for a reported dwelling fire at 204 N.4th street.
Companies arrived at 0112 hours and reported a 3 story vacant E.O.R dwelling with heavy fire showing 1st floor rear. Neighbors advised arriving units of squatters possibly in the building.Companies stretched lines and began searching the building. Heavy fire venting out the side rear windows set fire to the 2nd & 3rd floor wooden porch of a 3 story vacant mansion on the exposure 2 side.A 2nd alarm was struck at 0121 hours. Companies used numerous 1&3/4-inch lines to bring the fire in both buildings under control at 0205 hours. Searches of the building proved negative. No injuries were reported. The fire caused $60,000 damage to both buildings and was caused by a discarded cigarette from a squatter. Companies assigned on 1st alarm: E3,1,5,L1,L2,R1,Medic7, C5 & 7. 2nd alarm: E11,13,L3, C1,3 & 6
----042600: At 0620 hours box 34, 3rd & Walnut streets was struck for a reported fire again at 204 N. 4th street. Companies arrived at 0622 hours and this time reported fire showing from the 3rd floor gutter and roof area of the previous fire building. Companies stretched a 1&3/4-inch line and with extensive roof work extinguished the fire by 0650 hours.1 firefighter was treated at a local hospital for a puncture wound to the foot. Officials believe the fire was caused by an ember from the earlier fire landing in the 3rd floor cornice/gutter area. Companies assigned: E3,1,5,L1,L2,R1,Medic1,C5 & 7
