The following fires occurred in Reading,Pa. over the past few days:
----052200: At 0310 hours box 79, Schuylkill Ave. & Jefferson street was transmitted for a dwelling fire at 111 Walnut street. Companies arrived at 0312 hours to find heavy smoke showing from the 2nd floor of a 3 story M.O.R dwelling. Companies advanced a 1&3/4-inch handline and knocked down fire involving the 2nd floor front of the building, bringing it under control at 0334 hours. No injuries were reported and the fire is believed to have been started accidentally by candles left burning. A damage estimate was unavailable. Companies assigned: E12-3,11,1,L1,L2,R1,Medic5 & C2
----052900: At 0246 hours box 76, Front & Buttonwood streets was transmitted for a dwelling fire at 348 N. Front street. Companies arrived at 0249 to find a fire on the 2nd floor of a 3 story vacant M.O.R dwelling. Companies brought the fire under control by 0306 hours with a 1&3/4-inch line. A damage estimate was unavailable and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire has been listed as arson.Companies assigned: E3,11,1,L1,L2,R1,Medic6,C4 & 8
----053000: AT 0707 hours box 35, 5th & Elm streets was transmitted for a building fire at 330 N. 5th street. Companies arrived at 0708 hours to find a 3 story M.O.R. apartment building with a deep seated fire smoldering on a 3rd floor rear roof. Companies used a 1&3/4-inch handline and extensive overhaul to bring the fire under control at 0756 hours. A damage estimate was unavailable and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Companies assigned: E3,1,5,L1,L2,R1,Medic1, C4 & 6
----053100: At 0200 hours, box 723, 2nd & Elm streets was transmitted for a dwelling fire at 214 N. 2nd street. Companies arrived at 0202 to find a 3 story vacant duplex with 1 unit heavily involved and spreading to the other attached unit at 216 N. 2nd street.Companies led off with 2&1/2-inch and numerous 1&3/4-inch lines as a 2nd alarm was struck at 0219 hours. Companies made a quick knock down but had to use extensive overhaul to bring the fire under control by 0312 hours. The original fire building was destroyed, the attached unit on the exposure 4 side was heavily damaged and a similar type dwelling on the exposure 2 side (seperated by an allweyway) also suffered fire damage. The fire caused in excess of $60,000 damage and left a family of 4 homeless. The cause of the fire has been listed as arson. Companies assigned on 1st alarm: E3,1,5,L1,L2,R1,Medic4, C5 & 7. 2nd alarm: E11,13,L3,C1,3, & 6

********Note...effective this date at 0800 hours, all street boxes in Reading will now recieve a 4th engine as the F.A.S.T/safety company. Target hazard boxes (4 digit boxes) which already recieve 4 engines will not be assigned an extra company, the 4th due engine will assume the safety company role******
