PATERSON, NJ
An 8 year old child died in a 2 alarm fire in a 2 1/2 story wood frame at 251 E. 19th Street. Battalion 2 arrived and reported a 2 1/2 story wood frame fully involved. The alarm was sounded at 0131 hrs. and a 2nd alarm was transmitted at 0140. First alarm companies were Engines 5,1,4, and 6 Ladders 3 and 1. Battalion 2 and Deputy 1. Second alarm companies were Engines 8 and 3. There was a report of a occupant trapped on the # 1 floor and a civilian in the rear of the building. Companies were advancing into the first floor while another line was placed in an alley to try and get to the rear yard civilian. Two 2 1/2 lines were put in place and Ladder 3 personnel ran under the flames to get in the rear yard. They found a handicap adult in the rear yard. Members shielded the victim as they guided him past the flames to safety. Moments latter a flash over occured in the front of the building which was later found out to be where the child was, he was also on oxygen. Members tried to reach the 8 year old but were pushed back by the intense heat and violent flames. The fire was declared under control at 0400hrs.
