The following fires occurred in Reading over the past few days and are the latest in a rash of arson fires in the city:
----060200: At 0357 hours box 428, 9th & Elm streets was transmitted after an occupant reported smoke coming through the wall of her dwelling at 320 Cedar street. Companies arrived at 0400 to find smoke in the block. Upon further investigation, companies found a working fire in the basement of a 2 story vacant M.O.R. dwelling at 322 Cedar street.Companies made entry an brought the fire under control with 2, 1&3/4-inch lines by 0421. No injuries were reported and a damage estimate unavailable. The cause of the fire was listed as arson. Companies assigned: E1,3,9,13(F.A.S.T.company),L2,L3,R1,Medic1,C5 & 7.
-----060400: At 0317 hours box 34, 3rd & Walnut streets was transmitted for a building fire in the 200 block of N. 4th street. Companies arrived at 0319 hours to find a 3 story 60x40 M.O.R. vacant office building at 225-29 N. 4th street with heavy smoke showing from the 3rd floor as well as from the eves of 2 exposures. Companies forced entry and stretched lines as fire began venting from the 3rd floor rear. A 2nd alarm was struck at 0335 hours. Companies brought the fire on the 2nd & 3rd floors under control by 0431 hours with 3, 1&3/4-inch handlines. Companies were hampered by a large area of the 3rd floor rear flooring completely burned away, but prevented the fire from speading to the exposures. No injuries were reported and a damage estimate was unavailable--the building had been vacant from a previous fire in 1998. Officals ruled the fire arson, citing numerous areas an accelerant was poured. Companies assigned on 1st alarm: E3,1,5,11(F.A.S.T. company), L1,L2,R1,Medic4, C2 & 9. 2nd alarm: E13,9,L3, C1,4,& 7.
