Friday, June 16, at 2353 hrs., Berks County Communications dispatched companies 67 (Shillington), 57 (Mohnton), and 42 (Cedar Top) for a possible structure fire in the area of Pennsylvania Ave. and Brobst St., Shillington Boro. 67-10 (Chief) arrived on location reporting a duplex with the first floor at 409 N. Brobst St. fully involved, one victim in the front yard, and confirmed that all other occupants were evacuated. First arriving units began operations as the fire extended toward the upper floors of 409 N. Brobst, the attic of 411 N. Brobst, and exterior wall of 407 N. Brobst.

The first alarm was then struck, bringing companies 56 (Gouglersville) for RIT, and 64 (West Reading) and 69 (Kenhorst) for manpower to assist with supression. Simultaneous operations were undertaken from front and rear to attack and vent the fire building and address both exposures. Second alarm companies 59 (Lincoln Park) and 79 (Wyomissing) were called to assist briefly with overhaul, due to hot, humid weather. Units began to be released shortly thereafter, and all companies except 67 were in station and available by 0400.

409 N. Brobst received extensive fire damage throughout, while 411 N. Brobst sustained localized fire damage and extensive smoke damage and 407 N. Brobst sustained damage limited mostly to an exterior wall. Southern Berks Regional EMS provided medical services for the initial victim and one firefighter, who suffered minor cuts and was treated on the scene. The incident is under investigation by Shillington Police and the State Police Fire Marshall.
