runner 1 is a pumper or as they are called in the usa a engine company.its call sign goes back to the beginings of the fire service in sydney aust,It is one of 2 pumpers attached to the city of sydney fire station in the down town section of sydney.Flyer 1 is the other pumper attached there.they have just kept the call signs they had from the beginings of the brigade.so in sydney there is no pump 1 or pump 2 as these 2 would be called that if not for tradition.rescue 1 and ladder 1 are also attached to city of sydney fire station.flyer 1 is the busiest engo=ine in australia having responded to over 6500 runs last year.thats just fire/rescue/hazmat runs as the fire service does not run on ems calls.hope that clears it up.
