A fire in the elevator shaft had the First Union Bank on Market Street charged with smoke as firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze. A elevator shaft in the rear of the building filled the upper floors with smoke as firefighters worked quickly to contain the blaze. No injuries were reported and the Departments Combustibles Division is investigating the fire. Engine Companies 4,1,7, and 8 Ladders 1 and 2 Battalion 2 and Deputy 1 responded. The fire was concealed from fire fighters as they searched the building for the source of the smokey condition. The first arriving ladder co. vented the roof elevator shafts to relieve the smokey condition. The fire was brought under control in about an hour. For more info on PFD see: or
