Fires Out; Ashes Remain
SYOSSET - The fire is out at Saint Edwards Church on Jackson Avenue, but the
estimated $1.5 million worth of damage remains. Syosset Fire Department
Chief Nick Favata told News12.com, "The fire was determined to be
electrical. A cord from a prayer candle seems to have started the flames."
The flames, in addition to the water damage have destroyed the altar,
steeple, and most of the church. The Pastor of St. Edwards, Father Joseph
McComiskey, told News12.com, "We're devastated."
Two firemen were treated and released for heat exhaustion, one at the scene
and the other at North Shore Hospital in Syosset. Eight local fire
departments were on the scene assisting in fighting the blaze, including
Syosset, Jericho, Plainview, Hicksville, East Norwich, Huntington Manor,
Bethpage and Oyster Bay Fire Company #1.

According to Sgt. Smith of the Public Information Office at the 2nd
Precinct, the roads that were temporarily closed off during the fire have
now been reopened.
