On Friday, August 11, 2000, at 1254 hours, (12:54 p.m.), twenty five companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, four Battalion Command Teams, one LAFD Rescue Ambulances, four LAFD Helicopters, one Sky Crane, one LA County Helicopter, and four LA County Camp Crews, under the direction of Assistant Chief Emile W. Mack, responded to a Major Emergency Brush Fire near 8337 North Echelon Place in the Sun Valley area. First units on the scene reported an unattached garage well involved with fire spreading rapidly into the nearby brush. Aggressively attacking the structure fire with handlines and simultaneously attacking the brush fire, the fire was extinguished in fifty-three minutes. Firefighters were aided in their attack on the brush fire with water drops from the Sky Crane and helicopters. Firefighters confined the fire to the unattached garage and approximately five acres of brush. The single family dwelling in front of the garage was exposed but not damaged. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is listed as an “electrical short” in the garage. Fire damage is estimated at $20,000 ($15,000 structure and $5,000 contents).
