a 2nd alarm fire damaged a salvation army store at 0106 hrs in mt vernon ny. the fire evidently started from an appliance being left on in the testing area of the 2nd hand store. firefighters had smoke showing upon arrival and had to contend with evacuation of 60 residents who lived on the 2nd floor of the structure. fire damage was held to the area of origin with credit to the firefighters for an agressive interior attack and sprinklers adjacent to the fire room. the sprinklers kept the fire from spreading to other area's that had clothing stored for sale to the public. new rochelle fd sent 1 eng and 1 truck for stand by coverage. no injuries were reported.
