28 Aug 00 New Garden Twp PA - Members of the Avondale Fire company assisted by other area companies fought an intense two alarm fire in the township maintenance garage. The fire was dispatched at approximately 9pm and units remained on scene until well after midnight. First arriving Medic 94-2, which is headquartered at the adjacent police station, reported heavy fire involving approximately 40% of the building. Chief 23 who was still enroute to the scene immediately requested the first alarm tanker taskforce due to a lack of hydrants in the area. Crews from engine 23-1 made an aggressive interior attack with a three-inch blitz line which allowed one member to enter the building and save Avondale's Tanker 23-2, which was housed in the building. With the wires to the electric door openers burnt, the tanker had to be driven right through a garage door to remove it from the building. Several township trucks were also saved by firefighters once the doors were able to be opened.
Two firefighters were transported to Christiana hospital in Delaware, one with heat exhaustion and the other with a back injury. No employees were in the building at the time of the fire, which remains under investigation at this time. Tanker 23-2 received damage to it's light bar and roof top air conditioning unit but was able to be driven from the scene. Assisting Avondale were Hockessin, West Grove, Po-Mar-Lin, Kennett, and Oxford. Crews from Longwood and Westwood covered Avondale's station.
