Durham (NC) Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at 0350 this morning. Units responding included first due E-1, E-2, E-9, L-1, L-2, SQ-1, Batt. 2, MSU-1, Medic-1, FD-5 and the Safety Officer. Units arrived on scene to find a two story brick apartment complex with light smoke showing. Several apartments were complaining of smoke in their units. A couple units were forced, until it was discovered that the fire apartment was on the back of the building. The apartment was heavily charged with smoke. E-1 advanced an 1 3/4" line with L-1 and SQ-1 doing a search of the apartment. The fire was contained to a utility closet. A victim was located in the bedroom and removed from the residence. The victim was in full cardiac arrest. Advanced life support was immediately established by SQ-1, assisted by E-9. The patient was transported to Duke Medical Center and is listed in extremely critical condition. The fire is under investigation.
