This is District Fire Chief Fredrick A. Prather reporting two Cincinnati
firefighters will be honored on 9/21/00 by the Ohio State Fire Commission.
The firefighters will receive awards at 7:00 p.m. at the Ohio Fire Academy
located at 8895 East Main Street, Reynoldsburg, Ohio 43068.
The Ohio Fire Service Valor Award will be presented to Fire Captain Michael
Schmees, and Firefighter Gilbert Axle. On the morning of July, 1,1999,
Captain Schmees and Firefighter Axle entered a home to save a trapped
individual. The home was smoked filled, visibility inside the structure was
nearly zero and the fire was moving rapidly throughout the house.
Hearing the call for help from occupant, Captain Schmees and Firefighter
Axle proceeded into the dense, blinding smoke and continued to follow the
sound of occupant's voice until they had successfully reached him. These
firefighters carried the occupant outside of the house to safety and
administered first aid to him.
For saving a life, Captain Schmees and Firefighter Axle will receive the
distinguished award presented to them by the Ohio State Fire Commission.
