On December 29, 2000 at 0109 hrs., Berks County Communications dispatched companies 42 (Cedar Top), 57 (Mohnton), and 67 (Shillington) to 238 Hemlock Rd. in Cumru Twp. for a reported structure fire. 42-12 (Cedar Top Asst. Chief), who resides on an adjacent property, reported on location almost immediately with heavy fire on the first floor. He quickly confirmed that all occupants had evacuated the building, a two-story wood frame residence.

First arriving apparatus found heavy fire throughout the first floor and extension to the second floor and attic in progress. The first alarm was struck shortly thereafter, bringing companies 70 (Grill) and 56 (Gouglersville). The fire was extinguished, with extensive damage throughout the residence, and all companies except Company 42 were in station and available by 0530.

Operations were supported on-scene by Unit 200, the Reading Fire Department volunteer canteen unit, and standby crews from Squad 680, Southern Berks Regional EMS. Companies 69 (Kenhorst) and 59 (Lincoln Park) provided standby fire service coverage for companies committed at the scene.

Two Shillington firefighters sustained leg & ankle injuries due to falls in icy conditions around the scene, and were treated and transported to the Reading Hospital & Medical Center by Sourthern Berks Regional EMS.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by Cumru Twp. authorities.
