At 0121 on 12/31/00 Durham Engine 8 was dispatched on an investigation call to 901 Wadesboro Street for odor of smoke in the area. When E-8 arrived they found a two story wood frame apartment complex with heavy fire showing from the roof. The box was filled and E-3, E-9, L-1, L-2, SQ-1, Mobile Support 1, Safety Officer and Btn. 1 responded. The fire was rapidly spreading through four units and the second alarm was sounded bringing, E-1, E-4, E-13, Haz-Mat-13, Bethesda E-1, Bethesda L-3, SQ-4 and Btn. 2. The fire was finally brought under control with four units heavy damaged with fire, and eight other units damaged with smoke and heat. Units remained on scene until 1125 overhauling the structure and hitting hot spots. Twenty-one people were left homeless from the fire. The fire was believed to be started in retaliation for a fight with one of the apartment's occupants. The fire is under investigation.
