On Sunday, December 31, 2000 at approximately 1520 hrs., Berks County Communications dispatched Companies 67 (Shillington), 57 (Mohnton) and 42 (Cedar Top) to 25 Madison St. in the Borough of Shillington for a possible structure fire. 67-10 (Shillington Chief) arrived on location first, reporting nothing showing from the exterior of a two-story, single family dwelling. Upon further investigation, smoke and evidence of fire were found in the attic crawl space.
Crews from E-67 and E-42 were committed inside, while crews from L-57 & Tr-57 commenced roof operations. Fire was found to be spreading from the vicinity of a first floor fireplace insert up an exterior wall, through the crawl space and along the roof ridge. Access to the fire was very limited, requiring a two-pronged approach through interior walls and from the roof. Crews primarily used PW extinguishers, backed up by hand lines, in order to contain damage to the walls and roof in the immediate areas of the fire as much as possible.
The fire was extinguished, salvage and overhaul completed, and all companies were at station and available by 1715 hrs., in time to see the Eagles send Tampa Bay home to the golf course, completing an afternoon of successful operations for everyone. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
