At approximately 0300 Sunday morning, the Watervliet Fire Dept. was informed by a walk in of a house fire on 5th St. in the city. They responded with an engine, truck and rescue truck along with a truck from the Watervliet Arsenal FD. Upon arrival they had heavy smoke conditions and transmitted a general alarm recalling all of duty firefighters. The initial attack crew made entry and within three feet of the door they fell through to the basement as there was no first floor left. Both were rescued within minutes and were treated for minor injuries and released from a local hospital. An engine from Village of Green Island and the City of Troy was dispatched to the scene also. The fire was brought under control in about two hours and out in three hours. The fire was hard to contain due to the advanced stage of the fire, balloon construction of the house and false ceilings on the second floor. There were no other injuries and the house was a total loss.
