At 4:10pm on Saturday, April 28, the Wapella (IL) Fire Department was notified of a "working fire" in one of the towns' subdivisions. Upon arrival of the first engine, the crew found the one story, ranch style, 60'x20'home to be fully engulfed in flames. The fire displaced a family of 5 people and the Dewitt County Red Cross was called to assist the family. No damage estimate was available, and the cause was listed to be undetermined at this time, but non-suspicious. Crews from neighboring Clinton, and Kenney assisted in the blaze. Firefighters were hampered by a steady breeze and low water pressure in that area of town, so the utilization of tankers was necessary. No one was injured, however the fire did damage a nearby home, melting the homes' siding. The Illinois State Fire Marshal office is investigating the cause of this fire.
