Calumet City IL firefighters responded to a report of a "steeple fire" at a local church on August 1. Upon arrival they found a well involved fire involving the steeple of a large church. Initial attack consisted of a 2-1/2" line on the interior while the tower ladder was set up from the outside. A box alarm and second alarm was struck bringing several southern suburb departments of Chicago. A second truck was set up and the fire was placed under control but while trying to get some hotspots out the tower ladder suddenly lurched due to a mechanical or electrical failure striking the church. Two firefighters, Eric Weiser and Tim McGannon were left in a precarious position in the basket.

A crane had been called to assist with removal of the steeple prior to this occurring and arrived shortly after the F/F's were trapped at approximately 90 feet high. The crane and high angle rescue crews rescued the individuals after a dramatic rescue involving stabilization of the crew and eventual rescue. While taking over an hour to perform everyone was happy to be alright.

A major reason everything went well was the calling of resources in order to keep ahead of the needs. A significant factor was the Homewood IL. RIT team that was able to assist in this effort.
