On behalf of the Independence Vol. Fire Dept. in Tate County Mississippi I extend our heartfelt sympathy to the families of the two fallen firefighters and our brother in blue of the Shelby County Sheriff's Dept. These brave men who are called on daily to "put their lives on the line" were killed in a senseless act of violence. To the families and co-workers of these men we say God Bless and Keep you. God has the strength that you will need to face the days ahead. Keep the faith and it will keep you.

First of all, I would like to send my deepest condolences to the family of
all of the shooting victims who were killed in the Memphis tragedy today. I
live in Southaven, MS which is just south of Memphis. About 12:10 I headed
out for a doctors appointment in Cordova. I went my usual rout, going Shelby
Drive to Germantown Rd. As I was heading up Germantown Rd. I noticed a smoke
smell that smelled a lot like fireworks. As I got closer to the house I
noticed smoke. When I drove by the house there was flames coming out of the
bedroom. I thought about stopping, but just figured I`d be in the way of the
emergency crews, so I continued on my way. There were alot of sirens going
off, but I figured they were just responding to the fire. I went a different
rout home, not wanting to get stuck in traffic. When I got home about 2
hours later and turned on the TV, I noticed all hell had broken out. Just
thought you might want to know this, once again my condolences to the
    victims of this terrible tragedy.

The Marion Kindergarten Classes of Mrs. Cox and Mrs. Williamson has
learned a lot about about community helpers. Firefighters and police
officers are definitely five year olds heroes. We send our prayers to the
families, friends and the Memphis community.

as a memphian, i was in shock today as i heard the breaking news on t.v.
someone had taken the lives of men who face danger everyday in protecting
their communities. i shed tears when i thought of the families and friends
left behind and know that their minds are filled with questions of "why" and
such overwhelming grief. and on top of all of this they are faced with the
knowledge of it being a fellow firefighter that took those lives. i can't
imagine the burden they are carrying. i want all of the firefighters and
police officers to know that i appreciate them for protecting me and for
facing all that they do along the way. i also want their families to know
that i am grateful for their loved ones and the wonderful job that they are
    doing.
to the families of the victims, my thoughts and prayers are with you in your
time of sorrow. may god ease your burden and keep you wrapped in his love.

    god bless you all.

    >From 1993-1998 I worked for SWAT SECURITY on Presidents Island, Memphis. The
crew of Station House 32 and other area units were called to action many times
when I was on duty. They fought blazes, saved property losses, and saved lives.
One of the lives they saved was my own when on Nov. 21, 1994 I was shot through
both legs with a .45 handgun. I have seen the bravery and compassion of these
brave souls. I cannot express my deep sorrow and sadness at the violent and
tragic loss of Lt. Lerman and Pvt. Blakemore. May God be with their families
and friends. I have the greatest respect for the men and women of the Memphis
Fire Dept. and the Memphis Police Dept as well.

Let us not forget Deputy Peete who also gave his life in the line of duty.
Peace to his family and loved ones. The madness that must be stopped in not
with the gun, but with the minds of men.

Our hearts and prays our with the families of the Memphis Firefighters and the Sheriff Deputy that were killed. There or no words that can express the loss they have suffered. The only consolation I can offer is that you can ask any firefighter anywhere and they will tell you our brothers paid the greatest sacrifice, but they were doing a job they loved.

I was inspired to write this poem as I watched live coverage of this incident
    on
WMC TV5. I am a resident of Memphis, Tennessee and I was shocked and deeply
grieved by this tragedy. I hope this will offer some small measure of comfort
to all those suffering at this time.

    "A Chosen Few"

What empty despair can twist one's mind
To commit such a senseless act
Towards those putting "their" lives on the
    line
Keeping "our" property and lives intact

    They never pause or hesitate
    To speedily answer a call
    Never allowing themselves to discriminate
But helping us, one and all

They battle fire, crime and obstacles
That most of us could not conceive
They do it not for the glory but because
In their "unselfish" hearts they believe

That they are part of " a chosen few"
Carrying out these good deeds on earth
Please draw on your faith and trust as I do
That our God will reward their true worth!

    With you in prayer,

    Audrey Clemons

I am very saddened by the shooting of our fellow brothers. How can this happen? If you have any information on a trust fund, or the funerals for our fellow firefighters, please let me know. Thank you. And I hope and pray that this never happens again. The firefighters familys have my prayers. Stay safe.
