Unhappy Federal Firefighter complains of illness; dies

Captain Richard J. LeClair, 53, of Poway (San Diego County), died October 11 at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido.
Captain LeClair, who worked for the Federal Fire Department almost 26 years after serving in the Navy, had complained of illness on October 10 while working in the Channel Islands at the San Clemente Island Navy Outlying Landing Field.
He had been cleared to return to work just three days earlier after a six-month bout with cancer, said his wife of two years, Janis.
Family and colleagues remember him as a talented firefighter who had always wanted a career where he could help people. "He was just a good leader of men and a dedicated worker," remarked Chief David Martinequ of the fire department.
Captain LeClair, who was born in Wyandotte, Michigan, near Detroit, moved to San Diego when he joined the Navy. He worked at the Miramar Naval Air Station (now Miramar Marine Corps Air Station) while in the service. He joined the Federal Fire Department in 1974, working for rescue units that fought fires both in structures and those that specialized in rescue and recovery in air crashes.
He alternated weeks working on San Clemente Island with one week on and one week off. His current assignment involved a crash unit where he supervised a crew of three and also was training civilian crews.
In 1991 Captain LeClair was on a boat rescue that garnered him and colleague Ramon Thomas department commendations.
Survivors include his wife, Janis; two daughters, Jennifer and Nicole of Arizona; four sons, Ryan, Brett, Daniel and Beau; and two sisters, Carol Armstrong of St. Claire Shores, Mich. and Lynette Boulanger of Brooklyn, Mich.
Full department services were held Wed, October 18, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 15750 Bernardo Heights Parkway, San Diego. Graveside services followed at Dearborn Memorial Park, 14362 Tierra Bonita Road, Poway.
