A fellow Firefighter wrote this in 1999. I think it fits what has happened in the last few days. He even titled it "911".

"911"
I wish you could see
The pain in his eyes
As we open his door
And the flames fill the skies
I wish you could feel
A man come back to life
When he starts to breathe
And then looks at his wife

Because we give our time
Put our own lives on hold
And then come save the day
Like the legends are told
But we don't think of
the dangers it might bring
We must be angels earning our wings

I wish you could know
What it feels like inside
When flames surround you
and the fear subsides
I wish you could read
What goes through my mind
As we put her on a stretcher
and leave her family behind

Because we give our love
To our family and friends
and even to a stranger
Who needs a helping hand
But we don't think of
the danger it might bring
We must be angels earning our wings

Sometimes we fall
And we don't succeed
But we give our all
And forget all our needs

Because we do what it takes
When it's time to be there
So we start helping others
When the need is there
And we still don't think of
the dangers it might bring
We must be angels earning our wings

We must be angels earning our wings.

Let's never forget all the ones in the past week that who have "earned their wings". I am proud to be an American Firefighter.
