for December 21st:

1896: E-20 was organized & placed in active service in new quarters on the north side of W North Ave, near 10th St (now Ellamont St), Walbrook (Northwest Of Downtown) - It is a 2 story brick building on a lot 110'x60', costing $16,207, & the lot $1,500 - There are 2 doors for the exit of the apparatus - They received a new LaFrance Steam Engine & their 1st Captain was George F. Kennard, a promoted Lieutenant from T-10 - They are presently using a red & white, 1998 Pierce Saber, with a 1250 gallon per minute pump & 500 gallon tank - T-18 & Medic-8 are also quartered with them. (CHM2*TUH)

1926: 3 Alarms - Box#6834 - 0123hrs - 4th & Jefferson Sts - Brooklyn (South Baltimore) - Fire involved the 3 story masonry Saint Rose Of Lima School - The 2nd alarm was sounded @ 0127hrs & the 3rd alarm @ 0135hrs - A freight train blocked the Brooklyn Crossing & delayed the responding companies for 30 minutes - It was a terribly cold night & the firefighters suffered greatly - @ dawn, only the walls of the 3 story building were left standing - Firefighter Walter Duvall, E-37, fell off a ladder & broke his leg. (TUH)

1969: 5 Alarms - Box#1222 - 0434hrs - Baltimore St & Custom House Ave - Downtown East - BCPD Patrolman Bernard Henthorn, Central District, ran into the Quarters of Hose Co#1 on Gay St & notified the firefighters that the Gayety Theatre, in "The Block" adult entertainment district, was on fire - Deputy Chief Roland F. Wett radioed for 4 more alarms by 0454hrs - After flames burst through the roof of the 5 story high brick building, the fire was confined to the back stage area - Later, the loft where the scenery was stored caught fire & the old striptease house was going good again - Captain Julius Witzel, E-34, was overcome by smoke & rushed to Mercy Hospital. (CHM1*TUH)

1994: 2 Alarms + Special Call 4 Medics(12, 4, 5, 4{return}), 1 Engine(47), 1 Battalion Chief(2), & 1 EMS Supervisor(5) - 1959hrs - Box#719 - 2009-2013 W Pratt St - West Baltimore - An arson caused fire involved (3) 3 story brick vacant rowhouses w/fire on the 2nd & 3rd floors - Several firefighters were injured. 21DEC1994 - New York, NY - Bombing - A firebomb consisting of 2 jars of gasoline, a timer, flashbulbs, and matches is detonated in the NYC subway. More than 45 people are injured.

21DEC1988 - Lockerbie, Scotland - Airplane crash/Terrorism - The largest mass-murder in UK history occurred when a PanAm 103 exploded 31,000 feet over Scotland as a result of a terrorist bomb. 270 victims from the plane and the town were recovered. About 700 body bags were needed to collect all of the remains.

21DEC1972 - Nicaragua - Earthquake 23:10 announced the beginning of a series of quakes that pulverize Managua. The homeless number 200,000 and the death toll reaches 7,000.
