***BALTIMORE, MARYLAND FIRE HISTORY***
for December 31st:
1969: 13 Alarms + Special Call Water Tower #1 (Snorkle) - 6-6-147, 6-6-1422, & Box#1423 - 1930hrs - 711 S Eden St - Inner Harbor East (Southeast Of Downtown) - Fire involved the Mann & Parker Lumber Yard - 5 more alarms were radioed for & 6 alarms (12th alarm) from adjacent Box#1422 by 1947hrs, as the last multiple alarm fire of 1969 was by far the most spectacular, & during the coldest wave of the season - Flames shot more than 100' skyward, punctuated by many dull explosions, which sent tongues of fire even higher - Over 4 million board feet of new lumber was stored in the yard, & was destroyed along with 3 woodframe sheds - The gale like winds whipped blazing sheets of plywood, burning doors & plasterboard over the tinderbox lumber yard area, starting new fire & hampering firefighers & spectators alike - DC Charles E. Smith, Division 1, radioed for 2 alarms from adjacent Box#1423 @ 2013hrs to cope with the numerous roof blazes, but only 1 alarm (13th alarm) was sent out because the Department was left engine-less - When the raging fire had darkened down, the terrible cold & biting wind made firefighters miserable - It was the worst New Year's Eve blaze in the Department's history - A party had been held in the yard office several hours before the fire was discovered & Arson Investigators were searching for a connection between the year end festivities & the start of the fire.
