    Post Chronic Illnesses

Would like to hear from other firefighters with chronic lung illnesses (other than cancer) such as asbestosis, sarcoidosis, TB, etc. that may or may not be associated with the job. Trying to set up a support network/information exchange on treatments.

    Question

I will put my 2 cents in assuming asthma is considered a chronic illness....I've had allergies all my life and asthma within the last six or seven years. I have also been in a fire department for 10 years. When we actually get fires with heavy smoke, I generally feel like I am getting "attack" so I keep an inhaler in my turnout gear just in case it goes full course. If I am training at the fire academy I usually prepare myself and use the inhaler before the instructors light off the building. It helps for the most part.
