Post Subway ad insensitive to 9/11 FDNY deaths

Subway Sandwiches has a new TV commercial about a firefighter that lost weight eating its sandwiches. It features Firefighters in bizarre looking turnout gear happily singing on the back step of pumper, responding to a call. It would seem that Subway Inc. is attempting to capitalize on the new found respect for firefighters after the 9/11 tragedy. At a minimum, it is insensitive to the fact that 343 firefighters died at the WTC. Email Subway's advertising person at kulenych_b@subway.com Ask that they either remove this poorly timed commercial.

,or maybe Subway will donate proceeds of this ad campaign to FDNY Widows and Childrens fund. Bad timing and bad taste.

Not only is the ad disrespecful to the brothers killed 9-11, but they are also in violation .. they are riding the tailboard .. which has been a no-no for a long time .. and where are the safety harnesses ...(since it's a Ward, bet they are using the old rig from the Emergency show)

    Question

I can't believe that people are taking this commercial as an insult to the fire service in any way, shape, or form. The ad was shot in July of 2001, months before the 9-11 tragedies. The people in the ad, who are all LA area FF's except for the Henry subject, are wearing gear that is consistent with what is worn every day on the west coast. And to complain about guys riding a tailboard in a commercial is like bitching about Bull not buttoning his coat or wearing SCBA in Backdraft. Get a life. It's a freakin' TV commercial about a guy who lost some weight and happens to be a firefighter.

Let's concentrate on some real problems facing the fire service and not worry so much about something as trivial as this.

Guys...lets get real. I think we have biggewr things to worry about then the Subway Commercial. I just read an article about the Famous photo at ground zero, you all know the one, with the three firefighters raising our Flag. Seems that they are making that into a statue. Great for us, but wait, they are changing the Race of the firefighters. 1 Will be White, 1 will be black, and 1 will Hispanic. I do not know about you, but I am getting tired of " Political correctness".

Gee-eeze Brian, I lost over 67 "FDNY Friends" at the WTC, I also went to about 40 Funerals and/or Memorials. I dug like hell, and guys are still digging, but know what; The night I first saw those happy boys singing they lost weight.........I laughed my butt off. Life is short brother!

Hello. This is an interesting topic...

It's a commercial. Guys on our fire department have done far more embarrassing things then the Subway commercial could ever do to the "image" of firefighters everywhere. Relax!!

Clay HENRY - Congratulations on your weight loss!!! Your letter was well written and elegantly worded. Good Job!

As for September 11th - NO ONE will ever forget that day or the people that died that day - cilivians and emergency personnel. I feel for those experiencing the grief close up...and time will not lessen the pain....however, time continues to move with or without us. Can you believe it has been 4 months since that horrible day?! Will a year from now be appropriate for a commercial like the Subway one we are discussing - no, it will be the anniversary of the WTC...then when? I wish I could take on some of that pain for those that are bearing so much. And I am glad you have a place to voice your opinions and feelings - whatever they may be and whether we agree or not. I respect the choices we all make.

Hang in there!!! I send butterfly kisses and velcro hugs...and remember - we all in this together!!!! There are shoulders, hands, and hearts ready to receive any burden that those feeling the heavy losses because of the events on September 11th want to share with those of us that are at a distance.

    Red face

It's TV, home of left wing reality. Get over it. I thought it was a good add. I was upset about the tailboard, but when has Hollywood done anything right? Firefighters have been slowly coming into attention over the last year. Remember the Chevy adds? It's good PR for FF's. Maybe people will stop and think about funding us if they see more of us.

On a further side note: The former LACOFD E-51, that awesome Ward-LaFrance Ambassador , with Ultra -Vision cab, is I believe still in active service somewhere in Yellowstone Natl. Park, in a vol. fire dept. No shiny rehab, yet. This apparatus buff's fingers are crossed.

You want to bitch about something?Go read Doonesbury today. One of his charecters asks a FDNY member "So are you still milking it?"Making it seem like all firefighters are just using the 9/11 as an excuse to get more women(its in there read it if you dont believe me)I think if you want to send e mails send them to that mutt that draws it.Leave Subway alone for cryion out loud.Next youll go after Slim Fast for having a Paramedic do an add for them!<br />BTW Congrats Clay.

Like the man said, "It's just a commercial."<br />We have a lot more things to be worried about than how someone lost weight.

    Brian Sullivan-

LIGHTEN UP!!! It's just a freakin' commerical for cryin' out loud!! Like someone else said, it was shot in July, so it was shot before 9-11 occured.

Instead of griping and crying like a little 2 year-old, you need to be happy for Clay. Losing that much weight is a big accomplishment!!

Also, about the techinical stuff....it's TV!!

Like I said...LIGHTEN UP!!!! PLEASE get the needle out of your behind! <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0">
