Our cadets go through the same probationary period as new firefighters. We have to attend eight drills before being allowed to carry our gear and respond to incidents.

In our department, we go under a 6 month probie period, but we are issued our gear and pager after the first department meeting when we're sworn into the department and get our badges. We train with the regular ffs during drill nights and that.

At my station, it is required that you have essentials of firefighting and haz-mat operations. Other than that, it is simple. Take trainings as much as you can. you'll get a lot out of it when you turn 18.
