Default Why is this a competition?

Why is it so many post on here are about whos better then who or who does more then who or who has better departments then who?!?! I mean the way I see it everyone is on here for a reason, we all enjoy the fire service. Does it matter whos better at what, I don't think so. I enjoys talking about the fire service a lot but when im talking to someone I always feel no matter what I say they have to say something to out do me. I think it is just stupid. But if anyone wants to have an actual conversation let me know.

Well I don't think most of it is intentional, every department is different in the ways their juniors/explorers are run.

Like the ones (like me) who have to wait until their full members to take FF1, and then there are the ones that say they have FF 1 & 2, HazMat, IC200 & 300 and certifications like that (which some of them seem hard to believe, oh well).

Not really much we can do about the "out doing part" because no matter what there is someone who is can better you, or is not as lucky as you.

A lot of it is pride (ego) and just a very normal desire to feel that you're the best. Just enjoy yourself on the board and hope that others do the same. Good luck!

We are who we are that's why we boast... It's a fire department tradition from many years ago my crew can out pump yours, my horses are faster than yous, and my chili is better than yours... Wars have been fouhgt for less... But now matter what we all share a comon bond we are all firefighters in one shape or form... Hey we all started at the ground before climbing the tower... Many before you have walked this line and now we see the younger generation as my grand pa calls us taking over and it makes him proud... He's 65 now and been chief for 30+ years it makes him proud to see his grand kids carrying on his legacy in the service... But he was talking today about this very thing and it made me wana write... He talked about how in 79 they had a fire in a horse stable and how all the men on the department had boasted we had the best of this and that... Well that night they learned that they didn't and where surprised when a This Rigidy ole 1950's era pumper came and saved the day.... So see guys the point I am making is even though yes we are all different... Some may get more than others yeah were going to brag but just remember to the man who waited comes the spoils of those who jumped in to early.....

I don't really think it is much of a competition to say, but it is about pride and if your dept. happens to be one of the best you can boast about it, and know that it is true but sometimes the outdoing one another does get alittle bit much but it is because they find other people like themselves and find it hard to believe sometimes that there is other dept's out there that may be just as good or better than their own little corner of the world.I personally run with the best dept. in my county in Pa and we know it my dept. has a long running reputation of being great aggressive interior firefighters, and not to mention specialist's in extracation and other rescue's and EMS so it is not hard to be alittle boastful now and then.
Keep your pride alive guy's don't let anybody put you down.
