We are planning to have a free cookout. We are going to give out Fire Safety/Prevention materials, of course free food (this always draws the masses), and have either applications for volunteers or a sheet for them to get more information, etc. We are a small dept. with a pretty decent budget, in Georgia.
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions that might help us? Thank you in advance for any help!

Lets, see, at open houses and such, we've cut up cars, borrowed a sprinkler trailer(demonstrates residential sprinkler systems), and even built small structures to demonstrate quick attacks on room and content fires.

I just read your topic, so I might be too late with this. As the others have said, live demos are a sure thing to get the public's attention. We have a few during our open house each year and they go over well. You should also have things for kids to do as well, such as hands on events that reinforce stop, drop & roll, staying low in smoke/heat, or even let them handle a small hose line to put out "pretend" fire. Having a f/f walk around in full gear to show he/she isn't a monster isn't a bad idea either. Hope things go well for you. Take care & be safe.
