    Default 42 hour work week

Our department is exploring various shifts that can maintain a 42 hour work week with staffing the staton 24/7. If anybody is currently working within these parameters, I would like to get some help in trying to put together a package for presentation to our chief. Any information would be gretly appreciated. Thanks

We work an average of 42 hours a week over a one year period. It works with a 4 platoon system. Here's how it works, Monday to Friday days (10 hours) off till the following Thursday nite work 4 nites (14 hours) finishing Monday a.m. off till the following Saturday work two day shifts (Sat and Sun.) come back in on Monday nite and work 3 nites (Mon, Tues,Weds) off till the day shift starts again on Monday morning. So a day shift is 50 hours a nite tour is 56 hours and a split is 62 but averaged out it is equivilent to a 42 hour week. Has some good advantages only work 2 weekends a month and the shortest off time is 4 days and the longest is 6 days off, as well it can save you some cash on daycare as you are home quite a lot thru the week days.

A 24 on 72 off schedule with 4 platoons averages out to 42 hours a week in a 28 day cycle. There are 2184 hours worked in a calender year with this schedule. Most months you work 7 days and 8 in a couple of the months. Not many people who work this shift dislike it.

In NJ we have worked 42 hr weeks since the early 70's. There is a split in that some towns work 10/14's other work 24/72.The trend is to go to the 24/72's. There are afew odd ball shifts but these are the main ones.

In 10/14 most people work to 10 hr days 1 off 2 14 hr nites 3 off, there are some that lose the the day off inbetween and get 4 off at the end.
24/72 is easy , 1- 24 3 off 1 24 3 off and so on. There is either 1 or 2 real small south jersey depts that do 24-48 but 24-72 is the ulitimate and what every one pushes for.

Both theses schedules are based on 4 platoons.

Ditto to RS-1Alum's reply. Over 90% of NJ Departments work a 24/72 hour shift(42 hour work week). Only about 5 departments work a 56 hour work week.

Some other 42 hour shifts I have seen in NJ and NY are:
    1. 2-10 hour days, off 48 hours, 2-14 hour nights, off 72 hours
    2. 2-9 hour days, off 48 hours, 2-15 hour nights, off 72 hours
    3. 2-10 hour days, 2-14 hour nights, off 96 hours
    4. 3-10 hour days, off 72 hours, 3-14 hour nights, off 72 hours

The usual start and end times of the shifts are 0800 and 1800 with the 10's and 14's and 0900 and 1800 with the 9's and 15's.

Whatever you do, don't goto 56 hour workweeks like some other forum posters are thinking of doing in the forum titled 3 shift 10's and 14's versus 4 shift 24's?

    Be safe.
