Another post mentioned training LODDs were a small percentage of LODDs. They're not. They run about 10% each year.
During lunch, gleaned the following from USFA:
Cause of Death in LODDs:
1998
Cardiac
Cardiac
MVC -- Firefighter hit by car
Cardiac
Cardiac
Asphxiation, no other details given
Gastric Hemorage
Cardiac
1999
Seizure disorder related to training accident in '98
Fall (Manteca, CA "Ladder Bail" incident)
Drowning, Diver
MVC (killed by Drunk Driver while enroute to training)
Cardiac
Cardiac
2000
Drowning, Diver
Cardiac
Fire(Greendwood, DE incident)
MVC
Cardiac
Cardiac

Drowning, Diver
Cardiac
Cardiac
Shot (during a SWAT-medic training)
20001
Fall, 65' from Ladder
Cardiac

Drowning, Diver
Fire (Lairdsville, NY)
Cardiac

Drowning, Whitewater

Things that jump out at me:
-- 37 Total incidents over four years
-- Cardiacs were 54% of those. Cardiac runs around 40% of all LODDs, so there is an unusually high percentage dieing from stress & exertion during training.
-- My Goodness, look at all the drownings. I'm sure there is a lot more live fire training done than dive/surface water rescue. Sure seems way out of proportion to me.
-- Sometimes in this service, weird stuff just happens, like setting up a burn house, walking out and have a gastric aneurysm.
-- Sometimes luck isn't on your side, and you get hit by a drunk driver on the way to a drill.
-- Sometimes there is negligence, like putting blanks in a gun that was just supposed to have primers.

Dal, nice work.
I think there's quite a bit of reading to be done between the lines though. I'm going to stop short on this one. Drop me an e-mail if you'd like my take (between the lines). I don't think it is proper to post here.
