Greensboro firefighter dies during training exercise

Wednesday, April 10, 2002

(Greensboro-AP) -- A veteran Greensboro firefighter is dead
after a training exercise today.
Fire Captain David Douglas says that Captain William Beard was
involved in a live fire training exercise for a recruit school
which just graduated this week when he apparently suffered a heart
attack, collapsed and died.
Douglas says crews had just made an attack on a burning
apartment building in southeast Greensboro, and that Beard
collapsed after telling a paramedic he didn't feel good.
Emergency workers started C-P-R and continued en route to the
hospital, where Beard was pronounced dead.
Douglas says the 56-year-old Beard was a 12-year veteran of the
department. He'd come in to work on a day off to help train the new
recruits.
