Marlborough Firefighters Local 1714 IAFF/PFFM has 5 firefighters running in the 2002 Boston Marathon to raise money for the FDNY Widow and Children's Fund.
The Boston Athletic Assication reserved 100 numbers for public safety personnel to run for their cahrities. In lieu of having to run a certified marathon within the respected time limit, each runner had to raise at least $250 for their charity. The MFD Team has raised over $3,000 so far for the race. A comedy show sponsored by Local 1714 netted $25,000 for the FDNY Widow and Children's Fund and a voluntary toll road in conjunction with the Marlborough Police Patrolmen's union and the Marlbororough Police Command Officers union raised $43,000
for the NYPD and FDNY Widows and Chilren funds.
Bill Taylor, John Verock, Jeff MacQuarrie, Ken MacEwen and Mike Peckham had just 6 short weeks to train for this worthy endeavor.
The Marathon is being run on Monday, April 15th. The distance of the race is 26 Miles, 365 yards. It starts in Hopkinton and ends at the Prudential Center in Boston, near Engine 33/Ladder 15's house.
How about a rousing round of support and applause from the Firehouse.com forums community for the MFD Marathon Men!!!

re: run, Forrest, run...
Firelover...
It's funny you mentioned that, because Jeff's nickname on the MFD is
"Forrest Gump". The last time he ran in the Boston Marathon was when that movie first came out!"The education of a firefighter and the continued education of a firefighter is what makes "real" firefighters. Continuous skill development is the core of progressive firefighting. We learn by doing and doing it again and again, both on the training ground and the fireground."
